As a Realtor, I felt it my obligation to try to assist those who I had helped purchase a home in the past who may now be faced with mortgage delinquency or even worse, foreclosure. To that end, I got certified as a housing counselor through The Association of Housing Counselors in North Carolina and am currently working on my certification as a Foreclosure Prevention and Default Counselor through NeighborWorks. Being certified as a housing counselor and foreclosure prevention counselor lends credibility to the mortgage modification services industry. I would recommend any Realtor who would like to get involved, to get certified. That way, at least you have a firm understanding of the process and can provide more than just a referral to an attorney-based mortgage modification company.
